This job for Smithwicks was my first ever fur project and a lot of fun it was too. We decided early on to tackle this one using Houdini as we felt that Houdini’s procedural approach would make things much easier when it came to updating grooms and assets in shots. We had about 2 and a half months on the project from start to finish and during that time I made it my mission to learn everything I could about Houdini fur.

I adapted Houdini’s already fantastic fur tools to integrate them into The Mill’s post production workflow and extended their functionality by building a number of custom grooming tools to enable us to add very specific details to the squirrel.

Below is a video showing a few custom groom tools applied to a simple sphere. These particular examples are based on clumping.
